Types of Up and Over Garage Doors Available Today
On December 16, 2015 by adminUp and over garage doors have the advantage of being reliable and durable doors that are classified into two types mainly because of the mechanism they provide. These mechanisms are retractable gear and canopy gear. Both of these terms are used to describe the process of opening and closing of the garage doors and both of the operating systems have their pros and cons when used in different applications.
Up and Over Canopy Garage Doors
This garage mechanism is simple and easy to install. Its name originates from the panel of the garage door that is fully opened and protrudes about one thirds in-front of the sub-frame making a canopy shape. When opened, it provides the maximum width for drive through and installation is quite easy. The door of the canopy always remains balanced and is helped by the torsion springs that are placed just above the panel of the door on the fixing frame’s head. Canopy doors have been made using springs that are coated with zinc and are highly resistant to rust and corrosion.
The Canopy door mechanism can only be available op-to 8 feet in width. Generally, it is not used when automation is applied on the door, but with a decent quality of bow arm converter, the door can be successfully automated with the help of a powerful electric operator. A canopy door in use in conjunction with a bow arm converter gives the advantage of getting a maximum drive width through when it is open, which is very important for doors that are 7 inches in width and make access tight for many types of vehicles.
Up and Over Retractable Garage Doors
This door is increasingly becoming the main garage door being installed in buildings. Its originates from the panel of the garage door that retracts fully when it is opened. This mechanism is able to convert easily and safely into an operation requiring electricity while using the least amount of equipment required doing so. The drive-through width is on a mechanism that is retractable and continues to reduce and lifting arms remain in the middle of the sub-frame during the opening of the door so it is important to be careful that a lot of access is not restricted where width is limited. This is a common problem that is experienced on 7 feet wide doors or narrower.
Garage doors that use a retractable mechanism can also support very heavy loads as the tension springs which are located at the sides are easily increased in both strength and size.
When acquiring a retractable Up and Over garage door, there is an option available to the users known as ‘retractable plus’ whereby better drive-through widths are provided on sizes that are narrower by raising the side-arm pivot point to a higher state than the wing mirror heights of most standard cards.
Conclusion.
When one needs to automate a canopy Up and Over garage door, then using a bow and arm converter will be necessary especially when installation is done using a traditional boom operator. Garage doors which have a large width will tend to work well with a door that uses an Up and Over mechanism if it is available, eliminating the need for a bow arm. Most Up and Over garage doors come with the option of being controlled remotely by an electric operation using any one of many top quality remote controlled electric operators available from a variety of known brands.
