Construction workers frustrated by Whitehall policy & skills shortage

A recent Build Show survey has revealed that despite Chancellor George Osborne’s pledge to ‘get Britain building,’ nearly three quarters of the UK’s construction industry feels let down by the government, with 71% of builders and contractors citing the Whitehall policy as the biggest disappointment. Main reasons specified include a lack of investment in the sector, low consumer confidence and the cost of VAT on building materials, whilst 60% of participants noted the crippling red tape and regulatory compliance as a worrying problem.

Following on from the debate in the news over a lack of skilled workers, 68% reported that the shortage of young people joining the industry was a cause for concern, alongside an absence of support from local and national government and the banking sector.
